Commissioned for Casino Royale and worn by Eva Green as Vesper Lynd, the Algerian Loveknot is one of the most recognised pieces of jewellery in cinema history. Its rich story and meaning are why people choose it to mark the special moments and milestones of their lives.

How the Algerian Loveknot Began

The story starts in 2006, when the celebrated Bond costume designer Lindy Hemming approached Sophie Harley to design a necklace for Casino Royale, to be worn by Eva Green as the enigmatic Vesper Lynd.

The piece had to feel like something its wearer would treasure and never take off - jewellery with a soul and emotional connection that couldn’t be replicated by anything else. Sophie designed the Algerian Loveknot and it went on to thread through the heart of the film, returning in the sequel Quantum of Solace as the closing image left lingering on screen. Two decades later, it remains one of the most recognised jewellery designs in cinema.

The Algerian Loveknot Symbolism

Sophie drew on the ancient symbolism of the love knot, a motif found across cultures that represents unbreakable bonds and eternal devotion. A knot has no beginning and no end, only two paths continuously intertwined; it was the perfect language for a piece of jewellery about everlasting love.

She gave it her own signature twist with the winged heart clasp, symbolising love, hope, and liberation - a heart for love, and wings for the freedom within it. Thoughtful to the last detail, the clasp can be worn hidden at the nape of the neck, or turned to the front and fastened beside the knot as a feature.

Every piece is still made by hand in Sophie's London studio, using the traditional techniques she has spent a lifetime perfecting: granulation, fine wirework, and detailed engraving. It's this craftsmanship that gives each Loveknot its intricate depth, meaning and alluring aesthetic, designed to be treasured forever.

Why People Choose the Algerian Loveknot

Beyond its place in Bond history, the Algerian Loveknot has become a piece people reach for at the most meaningful points in their lives. Its symbolism, a bond that cannot be broken, lends itself naturally to the moments worth marking forever.

To mark an anniversary. A knot of eternal love makes a deeply personal anniversary gift - a way to say still, and always without needing words. Many couples return to add a matching piece year after year.

As an alternative engagement ring. For those who want something with meaning and individuality rather than a conventional solitaire, the Loveknot rings are designed with forever in mind - the intertwined knot sitting on the finger as a daily reminder of an unbreakable bond.

As a gift to someone you love. A mother, a daughter, a partner, a dear friend - the Loveknot carries a message of devotion that suits every kind of love, making it a gift that's treasured long after it's given.

As a treat for yourself. Not every meaningful purchase is a gift from someone else. Many choose the Loveknot to mark their own milestone, a new chapter, a personal achievement, a moment of self-celebration, drawn to a piece that carries a story as well as beauty.

Whatever the reason, the Algerian Loveknot is a piece that's made to be worn, loved, and eventually passed on - a future heirloom in the truest sense.

In Conversation with Sophie Harley

We spoke with designer Sophie Harley about the piece that became an icon — and what it means to her two decades on.

Q: The Algerian Loveknot began with a commission from costume designer Lindy Hemming for Casino Royale. What do you remember about that brief?

It was such an exciting opportunity, and at the time I had no idea what an important part of the film it would become! The brief was for a necklace that would become intrinsic to the storyline — carrying its own secret history and something Vesper would treasure and never want to take off. I knew it had to represent real emotional connection, not just something that would look beautiful on screen.

Q: The winged heart has become your signature. What does it represent?

I’ve always been drawn to ancient objects & artefacts and the stories they tell. I also love the idea of hidden symbolic meanings .. I also studied Renaissance painting so the secret symbolism in those paintings has always fascinated me. I’ve spent decades drawing in museums & art galleries around the world, & finding inspiration in the smallest things ..  The winged heart symbolises love, hope, and liberation. A heart for love, and wings because true love should never feel like a cage — it should give you the freedom to fly. I wanted that meaning woven into the very clasp of the necklace.

Q: Every piece is still made by hand in your London studio. Why does that matter so much to you?

Craftsmanship is everything to me.The granulation, the wirework, the engraving — these are all highly skilled traditional techniques that take years to master, and they give each piece its soul. When something is made by hand, it carries the human touch and connection as well as the care that went into creating it, and I really do think people can feel that in the final piece. There are many processes involved in creating every piece of jewellery which leaves my studio, and each skilled member of my team is responsible for one or more of those processes.

Q: Did you ever imagine it would become so loved, all these years later?

Never. You simply can't predict these things. When I originally designed it I had no idea that it was going to be worn by Eva on screen for so much of the movie and Casino Royale really is one of the most enduring love stories in Bond history! To see it become part of so many people's own love stories — chosen for engagements and anniversaries around the world — has been one of the greatest joys of my career. People often surprise their partners with a visit to my studio & it’s beautiful to see such emotional stories playing out before my eyes! Everytime I see the film it’s still thrilling to see my work on screen!

Q: What do you hope people feel when they wear it?

I hope they feel very special and loved, and I hope they feel that sense of freedom the winged heart represents. And I hope, in time, it becomes a treasured heirloom that they can pass on to someone else that they too adore.
